Our Eyes Are on God (2 Chronicles 20:12)

One of the most inspiring attitudes in the face of life’s great battles was taught to us by King Jehoshaphat in his moment of greatest anguish and dependence.

2 Chronicles 20:12 O our God, will you not execute judgment on them? For we are powerless against this great horde that is coming against us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.

» The Right Attitude Before the Impossible

This is a wonderful biblical passage! The king of Judah, Jehoshaphat, was facing a terrible and extremely difficult situation: three kingdoms were advancing to wage war against Israel. When warned of the imminent danger, he positioned himself in an exemplary way: he sought the Lord and called all the people to fast and pray. Looking at the enemy multitude, Jehoshaphat prayed sincerely, confessing to God that he had no strength to resist and did not know what to do, but that his eyes were fixed on the Lord, the only One who could do anything.

» Recognizing Our Dependence

How many times do we go through similar situations? We face moments when there seems to be no way out, when our struggle looks gigantic and tries to make us sink. However, what Jehoshaphat did must be our attitude in every moment of our lives: look to God and seek in Him the help and strength we need. The humble words of this king should inspire every human being on this earth.

It is true that many times circumstances are so difficult that we do not know how to act. But the attitude that never fails and always brings victory is to seek the Lord and place in Him our faith and hope that He will show us the way. Never detach yourself from God. Regardless of the size of your battle, keep your eyes fixed on Him, for He will always be there to help you.

» The Battle Belongs to the Lord

And God’s help comes! When Jehoshaphat finished crying out to the Lord before the congregation in the temple courtyard, God raised up a prophet with a clear and comforting message: “You will not have to fight this battle, for this battle is the Lord’s.” The Lord revealed exactly which way the enemy would come and declared that the people would only watch and see God’s action, for He Himself would defeat the adversary.

2 Chronicles 20:
15 And he said, “Listen, all Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem and King Jehoshaphat: Thus says the LORD to you, ‘Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed at this great horde, for the battle is not yours but God’s.’
16 Tomorrow go down against them. Behold, they will come up by the ascent of Ziz. You will find them at the end of the valley, east of the wilderness of Jeruel.
17 You will not need to fight in this battle. Stand firm, hold your position, and see the salvation of the LORD on your behalf, O Judah and Jerusalem.’ Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed. Tomorrow go out against them, and the LORD will be with you.”

» The Supernatural Act and the Victory

Jehoshaphat obeyed. He ordered the ministers to begin praising God ahead of the army. As the praise rose, the Lord worked a great deliverance: two of the enemy nations turned against the third and destroyed it in the desert. Then those same two nations fought each other and annihilated one another. When the people of Israel arrived at the place, they found only the remains and were able to gather all the wealth left behind.

As we can see, when we no longer have the capacity, strength, or wisdom to win, the Lord intervenes, guides us, and takes the lead in the battle. You will see situations turning around and victory being placed in your hands.

Therefore, do not commit the foolishness of leaving God’s presence. Always seek the Lord in every circumstance, because He has the power to do absolutely anything!
