The Heart That Burns for Jesus (Luke 24:31-32)

Luke 24:31-32 And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their sight. They said to each other, Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?

Here we have the account of two disciples walking toward the village of Emmaus. They were saddened, talking about the death of Jesus. Their hope that Christ would be the redeemer of Israel seemed to have died on the cross three days prior.

In the middle of this journey, the resurrected Jesus himself approaches and starts walking with them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him.

Hearing the lament of those men, Jesus rebukes them for being foolish and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets had spoken. Then, He begins to explain the Scriptures, from Moses to the Prophets, revealing everything concerning the Messiah.

» The Light of the Scriptures

Jesus' approach teaches us an essential lesson. Many, even today, are ignorant of the Word of God. Because they do not read the Bible, they remain in darkness, without understanding the depth of the promises the Lord left us and without understanding the true power of Jesus Christ's message written in the Gospels.

We must rejoice immensely, for the revelation of Jesus has already been given to us! Just as it was taught to those disciples on the road and to the people of Israel centuries before, today we have the opportunity to warm our hearts with the transforming power of the Word of God.

» Let Your Heart Burn for Jesus

When they reached their destination, Jesus broke the bread and the eyes of those men were finally opened. They recognized Him, and at that very moment He disappeared. Their immediate reaction was to remember the feeling that took over them during the journey: "Did not our hearts burn within us?"

My brother and sister, may this same spiritual joy be a reality in your life! When you read the Bible, meditate on the Word of the Lord, or listen to a sermon, give the Holy Spirit the freedom to make your heart burn. We have this need. The promises of our God are too great and too strong to be treated with coldness.

God's revelation remains alive today. Every verse and every teaching He left us should move our inner selves, our emotions, and our minds. The Word brings us joy, exhorts us, corrects us, and teaches us.

» Motivate Yourself to Dive into the Word of God

Therefore, motivate yourself to find joy in reading the Bible. It is obvious that if you don't read the Word of God, you won't feel your heart burn. Without reading, there is no meditation; without meditation, there is no revelation from the Holy Spirit; and without revelation, there is no joy in understanding what God has spoken.

Go deeper into the Word of the Most High. Seek it daily so that God reveals Himself to you, exactly as Jesus did with those two men on the road to Emmaus. May your heart burn with joy and spiritual gladness as you hear and live what the Lord has already written for us!
